About Us

Awê. Pronounced: ah-weh; A casual greeting or way of agreeing with someone.

This is the outlook that our brand has. Casual but professional, and just down right “lekker”.

Our love for coffee and people combine as we serve our community in the Western Cape. We are located in the upper areas of Somerset West, where we are able to serve school goers (and their parents), dog walkers & daily commuters. Every one of these patrons is incredibly important to us as each of them has a different walk in life, a different story to tell & a shared love of coffee. They know that our passion shines through our friendly service and the quality of our coffee.

OUR ORIGIN STORY

Awê Brew Coffee Bar started as a small coffee stop in December 2017, on the main road of Strand, Western Cape. It was a spur of the moment decision to pursue this between Bryan & his wife, MJ, when they found a Facebook advert for a space to rent for a relatively low cost. They went to view it, fell in love with the idea, and immediately started building towards their future. The 16 square metre space was very cozy, but we managed to get enough space to build a bar out of pallets and start serving the Strand community.

The name Awê Brew has two origins.

Awê
A very well known colloquial word used in South Africa. A word to agree. To greet. To acknowledge. A word Bryan used very often with friends.

Brew
Of course, a cliche word used in the coffee industry. Not necessarily for its primary meaning of "brewing" coffee, but also for a lot of use in marketing. However, the word bru (synonym) is also a South African colloquial word, describing a close friend and a term of affection used by one person to another. It is a variation of the word "broer" in Afrikaans meaning "brother". Predominantly used by men, although considered completely gender neutral.

Therefore, awê bru.

The name of Awê Brew wasn't the original favourite, as Bryan had suggested it early on as a joke but MJ wasn't a fan. Other names were surfaced but the pair struggled to settle on a favourite. They continued building the shop before opening, and in that time the name Awê Brew grew stronger on MJ's mind, until she eventually conceded she secretly liked it from the beginning.

Our Coffee

Our beans are of the finest 100% arabica beans, imported from Guatemala and Uganda, and roasted for us weekly by Balance Coffee Roastery. The aroma is rich and the roast medium to dark, perfect to satisfy every coffee addict’s desires. The roast is rounded with hints of nuts and cocoa, just for that little bit of a smooth, finished aftertaste. Mouthwatering stuff, right?

The Team

BRYAN

The brains behind the operation. Bryan started Awê Brew from the ground up & works hard behind the scenes to continuously grow this SME. His vision for the company is to expand into the greater Western Cape area and run a chain of caffeinated sanctuaries.

NIGEL

Meet Nigel, our head barista. Nigel has been with Awê Brew since February 2020 and, honestly, we wouldn’t have anyone else fill the shoes he is so capable of owning. When you stop at Awe Brew at our local spot in Somerset West, that friendly face and amazing vibe he has is almost more important to our regulars than the coffee they crave itself.
